'Kandahar' Movie Review - Good One from Major

Major Mahadevan is back with another mission. Yes this time also he did it well with his boys. Kandahar, a very well narrated story with good patriotic and emotional scenes.

The duo Big B and Mohanlal did their role excellently. Their combination scenes are the highlight of the movie.

About the movie, I am not going to reveal any single scene here but will give you a brief review. First half is a bit slow compared to the 2nd half. First half mainly focusing on the family relations and military training. But you can see good emotional scenes of Amithabh Bachan with Ganesh (as Big B's son).

Second half is very good with good pace. Its not only focusing on the hijack mission, but also a father's feeling towards his son. Really heart touching scenes with Mohanlal and Big B.

The climax scene is excellent.

Overall a very good movie to watch with excellent patriotic scenes.

Folks, don't expect military operations like you have seen in 'Keerthichakra' and 'Kurukshetra' and don't expect a full time hijack and military operations.

Rating: **
Definitely worth a watch....

'Shikkar' - The Winner

Its time to decide the winner of Ramzan releases. There were mainly 3 films released to compete each other and 3 movies are running successfully all over Kerala. But any how there will be a winner among the releases who made waves among viewers and got a better collection in the Box Office.

Mohanlal's Shikkar is the first release of Ramzan. The film had a grand opening and has managed to continue the same trend. Mammootty had two Ramzan releases Renjith's 'Pranjiyettan and the Saint' and Henry's 'Vandematharam'. 'Pranjiyettan and the Saint' managed to survive in the BO as a hit. But Vandematrama is a great appointment for Mammootty and his fans. The movie is a  big disaster in the Box Office.

The third movie is Laljose - Kunchakko Boban team's 'Elsamma Enna Aankutty'. The film is getting a solid collection and good opinion among family audience. The movie is going stronger in all major centers.

As far as now Shikkar is holding the 1st position while Elsamma Enna Aankutty and Pranjiyettan in 2nd and 3rd.

Oru Naal Varum: FAMILY HIT (Indian Express Review)

Below is the review of Mohanlal – Sreenivasan’s new movie Orunal Varum posted in Indian express by Unni R. Nair

Orunaal Varum was an eagerly awaited movie as it was after a considerable gap that Mohanlal and Sreenivasan (who is as popular as a scenarist as he is as an actor) were teaming up. The duo had last come together to deliver Udayanaanu Thaaram, which went on to become a blockbuster. This time, they were playing key roles in Orunaal Varum, which had T.K. Rajeev Kumar as the director and was being produced by Manianpilla Raju. And since Sreenivasan was in charge of the script too, the film was expected to do great. Slated to release in May, the film got delayed and made it to the theatres last week. Having got good reviews, families are flocking to the theatres to watch it. The Mohanlal-Sreenivasan team had always been the favourite of family audiences and youngsters alike.

Orunaal Varum is one of those films that takes a peep into the lives of the ordinary people, the aam aadmi and how they are fleeced by corrupt government officials. Sreenivasan plays a thoroughly corrupt Town Planning Officer while Mohanlal appears in the first half as an ordinary person who is forced to go after the Town Planning Officer in a bid to make him approve his plan for building a home. Of course Mohanlal’s character goes a different route later and so does the plot too. But the plot is well-constructed and the element of satire well worked out. The film retains the interest of the audience till the end. Sameera Reddy plays Mohanlal’s heroine while Devayani is cast opposite Sreenivasan. Suraaj Venjara-moodu, Nedumudi Venu and Siddique play key roles in the film, which has Sreenivasan penning the story and the script too. M.G.Sreekumar is in charge of the music while Murugan Kattakada has penned the lyrics. The film is doing well at all centres, especially with the family audience.

Manianpilla Raju, popular actor-producer has made Orunaal Varum under the banner of Manianpilla Raju Productions. He also does a cameo role in the film. When asked about the response the film has been eliciting at the box-office, Raju says, “The family audience has accorded a warm welcome to the movie at all centres. We are very happy about it. However, the film was censored on April 7 and we had planned to release it on May 7. But, we could release it only in July; it got delayed by two months. This was due to the strike, the issues that had vexed the Malayalam film industry and had brought everything to a standstill.” This has affected the film’s box-office prospects. “We had planned to bring it out during the summer vacations. If that had happened, it would have done really great. We won’t get the summer vacation audience any longer. And moreover the holy month of Ramzan too is approaching; during the month of fasting, it’s usually a low turn out at the theatres. That makes things bleak for us. Still, it’s good that the family audience has taken it up and Orunaal Varum will soon turn out to be a hit. The delay, however has cost us a lot, in terms of money itself.”

Asked about the budget, Raju says, “Including the print and publicity costs, the film cost me around Rs. 4.35 crores”.

The film released on July 9, but indications are that Orunaal Varum will emerge a hit.

'Oru Naal Varum' - Review

oru naal varum review
Mohanlal - Sreenivasan's 'Oru Naal Varum' released yesterday and getting good response from the audience.

The magic of the duo is repeating in this movie also. But somewhere the old combination is missing, though they have done an excellent job.

Gopikrishnan (Sreenivasan) is an Assistant Town Planning Officer, who misuses his powers, bends rules on receiving bribes and never cares about the poor. He has great dreams about his daughter and is saving money to get a seat for her admission to a medical college.

Sukumaran (Mohanlal) approaches Gopikrishnan for approval to build a house. The two were part of a scuffle earlier and the Town Planner makes life hell for the hapless Sukumaran. Now, we can't reveal further about the storyline as there are some suspense elements involved here.

Some interesting twist and turns and descent script makes the film a good one.  Mohanlal and Sreenivasan handled their roles very well and we can watch a healthy acting competition with these acting legends.

'Oru Naal Varum' handles the current issue and the director T K Rajeev Kumar and team has almost succeeded in their attempt to make it reachable to the audience.

So go for the movie, definitely you will have a great two and half hour to enjoy.

'Alexander The Great' Review

On his father's demise, Manu Verma (Bala) arrives at Mumbai and spends the first half of the film finding his half brother Alexander (Mohanlal) whom he has never seen in his life, but who has been entrusted with the entirety of his father's wealth. He finds Alex and much to his surprise also discovers that he is not normal. The second half has Alexander arriving in Dubai with Manu and finally heading back to Mumbai. If you think that this cannot possibly be content enough for a story, better think again.

It's apparent that Alexander has gone bonkers, and twenty minutes into the film we are ready to give him company. These assaults at your normal thinking skills are frequent and they go on for the rest of the film. Alexander is a strange chap indeed, and to ensure that we get a pretty decent picture as to how his normal day goes, they show him getting up, walking around, having breakfast, lunch and dinner, reading books on the bed, and finally switching off the light at 12 in the night. Now with an elaborate detailing as this, you could hardly miss a point.

The real ordeal starts with Manu dragging Alexander out of the clinic. The problem you see is that Alexander keeps asking for specific colored shirts as the clock keeps ticking away. So we need to hang on till the shirt change is over. And once that's done, he insists on a number at the dinner table. Four is the magic number, whether it be idlis or chapathis. Yes, you got it right. We need to stay around till those idlis arrive.

Wait. If you are wondering if Alexander is just nuts, he isn't. The man is a real genius. For starters, he was about to graduate from a medical school. He learns telephone directories by heart. He could tell you which continent Egypt is in. And to top it all, he takes part in Maths Wizard competitions and wins a cash prize of one lakh rupees. Now this is a breath-stopping event that goes on for a good ten minutes or so with some guy asking questions in English (with subtitles in Malayalam!!) and Alexander coming up with spectacular answers.

Now these are what you call the normal-genius skills. What is almost paranormal is when Alex lures his mates away from a car and it bursts into flames a few minutes later. So when he says that he won't board a flight, we sense something is wrong. And indeed it is, since the announcement comes quite soon that the flight has crashed. Besides predicting, he could rush you into an operation theatre if you are in dire need of a surgery, and do an impeccable act that would have the duty doctors gasping for more.

From what I was able to gather from a couple of hours and slightly more, I have kept aside a few real gems. The first one is that there is a very thin line between sanity and insanity. The most insane person might be the sanest one around, we are told. It all depends on the way we view things. That's pretty comforting. The second one is that you just need to pretend to be insane if you are accused of murder. They will let you live in a mental sanatorium for the rest of your life.

Mohanlal is the true savior in this film, as much as it remains that the film itself could never be saved. This is what I would call a survivor act, and this amazing actor swims across the torrent with his head held high. A brave act indeed, when there is literally nothing else that makes this film worth a watch.

Alexander the Great is as incomprehensible as the mutterings of its chief character. It's confused, and utterly unfathomable. It has nothing going for it except its leading star.
