Rafi Mecartin gets a reward- Nadodikattu 4

Converting Hello into the biggest hit of the year definitely has its claims.

The major part of the accolades went to its directors, who timed the sequences to perfection and etched out the best of the performances from Lal, the most flexible actor around.

And so Mohanlal has decided to grant his dates for the fourth part of Nadodikkatu to the super hit director duo of Hello Rafi -Mecartin, as a reward for the big hit.

Earlier the news was that Roshan Andrews is going to do the sequel of the classic comedies. The producer of Hello Joy Thomas Shakthiulangara will fund the project, which also has got the support of Sathyan Anthikkad, the original director of the classic movie.

The fourth part will again feature as usual, Mohanlal with Sreenivasan, as Dasan and Vijayan.

"AliBhai" shoot complete!

The climax of Mohanlal's Shaji Kailas directed action thriller Ali Bhai was over on Friday (July 27) in Chennai. Mohanlal who had recovered from his injury during the climax, is now dubbing for the film.

Ali Bhai will be a great Ona Sadya for Mohanlal fans. Lalettan is said to have done a great job in this mass masala, with terrific punchlines, a fantastic market song, and spellbinding action scenes.

The post production work of the film has commenced in Chennai. Ali Bhai will release worldwide on August 15 with simultaneous opening in Mumbai, Chennai, Delhi and Bangalore, along with 60 screens in Kerala.

Mohanlal in another double role

After a couple of years, Lal is again attempting a double role in the next film by Joshy. The film in the scripts of A K Sajan, is produced by Sasi Ayyanchira in the banner of Sree Uthrattathi Films.

The same banner has produced Mission 90 Days, recently. This new untitled film will be an immediate project of the veteran director after Nasrani which is presently in the sets.

Joshy has recently created a few hits with Lal including Naran, but his last release July 4 with Dileep didn't work out quite well.

Lal with a dream run

Malayalam superstar Mohanlal seems to be going through the very best of the times of his career.

Out of the ten films that was released in the last couple of years, seven emerged as super hits, while the eighth, Hello which is presently in theatres is all set to break the records of its precursors.

Of the ten films that were released after August 2005, Naran, Tanmatra, Rasathanthram, Vadakkumnathan, Keerthichakra, Baba Kalyani, and Chotta Mumbai, completed hundred days, while only Photographer and Mahasamudram did not do well.

No other actor in the recent filmi history can boast of such a grand winning parade.

Hats off, Lal...............

Clash of the biggies

Mohanlal and Mammootty will have their movies clash at the box office on the Ramzan day.

Rock N Roll, scripted and directed by Renjith with Mohanlal in the lead role and Renji Panicker's Mammootty film Rowdram are the two films releasing on 12 October.

Mohanal plays a drummer in the move which is based around music.

Onam line up not yet finalised

Last Onam, all the popular star's films, including Mammootty's 'Bhargavacharitram Moonam Khandam, Mohanlal's Mahasamudram, Dileep's Don, Jayaram's Aanachantham did not do well at box-office, as a small film by the young stars vigorously marketed by Lal Media captured the audience to become the biggest hit of the year.

But this year, with another thirty days for Onam, only Mohanlal's Alibhai and Suresh Gopi's Kichamani MBA are finalized to hit the screens, as the strike that MACTA initiated has put a question mark on release of films like Mammootty's Nasrani, Dileep's Calcutta News and Prithviraj's Chocolate, which were earlier planned as Onam releases.

Prithviraj who was not able to deliver anything better after Classmates is looking for another big hit in Chocolate directed by Shafi, who has a credit list of lot of hit against his name. The film is in its last stages of shooting.

Suresh Gopi had a bad year so far, but his latest Nadhiya Kollapetta Rathri has started in a good note and may rise up to become a big hit. Dileep had a hit in Vinodayatra, but it is his only major hit in past one and half years and he has also great faith on Blessy to deliver another big hit through Calcutta news, shot entirely at Kolkata.

With a debacle behind him in Mission 90 Days, Mammootty is also looking keen to get his Nasrani released this Onam. If he can't complete the film on time, he may go for Ore Kadal which is in its final stages of dubbing.

The latest news also suggests that Lohitha Das’s Naivedhyam and debutante A V Narayanan's Anthiponvettom may also grace the theatres by Onam.

Meanwhile, Mohanlal is all set with Alibhai, one of the most anticipated films of the year.

With two hits this year, he is quite safe and is looking to make a magnificent release for Alibhai, just like Sivaji which recently shocked Malayalees with its gigantic release.

Roshan Andrews with Nadodikkattu - 4

Roshan Andrews is a director who cares much for the products that he creates. He conceive commercial cinema as an artistic creation rather than a saleable product, which is evident from his first two films Udayananu Tharam and Notebook which were good commercial hits and artistic creations.

But now the director is coming up with projects that are sure commercial successes. The first among them is a sequel to the famous Nadodikkattu films which were directed by Sathyan Anthikkad and Priyadarshan.

Roshan will be directing the four part of the group, which will have again Mohanlal and Sreenivasan as Daasan and Vijayan.

James Albert, the scriptwriter of super hit film Classmates, will pen the scripts for this film which is planned to take off by the first months of 2008.

Apart from these, Roshan also have two other projects with Mammootty and Mohanlal, both scripted by Bobby and Sanjay, the scriptwriters of Notebook.

Top 5 Movies

The top 5 movies this week shows that one among them has emerged a big winner, clearing the others by Yards.

Yes, Hello the Lal starrer is collecting like anything and is now termed as one of the biggest grossers

The top five Malayalam films are:

1. Hello - Director Rafi-Mecartin have etched out the best from the comic presentations of Mohanlal, to make one of the biggest winner of the year. The film is collecting like anything amidst thick rains. Already the film has grossed around three crores from its 20 days run. The film is sure to complete a busy hundred days.

2. Mission 90 Days - Major Ravi is back with the army story, this time of the National Security Guards (NSG) team tracking down the assassins of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. The film has a meticulous performance from Mammootty, but it is receiving mixed responses in the box office, due to its more than realistic approach including the loud usage of Tamil without subtitles. The flick will find it hard to emerge a winner.

3. Arabikatha - Another hit from Lal Jose, whose bold theme is well appreciated and the film is growing in audience support. The movie is devised to become an eye opener to the die hard communist population of the state.

4. July 4 - The film had a big crew composing of the best of the directors, scriptwriters and of course, Dileep. The title was supposed to bring him good luck, the film couldn't make itself the winner among the other biggies.

5. Sooriyan - Actor Jayaram and director V.M. Vinu team up to relaunch the actor into the big league, but the films leaves not much to be encouraged and is showing not a good fare at the box office.

The new Sholay is different - Mohanlal

Mohanlal, who is presently at Kozhikode, engaged with his onam release Ali Bhai is also keen on the results of his second Hindi outing, the new Sholay by Ram Gopal Varma. The film which was recently renamed as Ram Gopal Verma Ki Aag will also hit the release centres during the Onam season in Kerala.

As every Malayalam moviegoers are very much interested to know, how their hero has performed in the role originally done by Sanjeev Kumar, Lal is trying to keep a low profile of the role.

"As this film has taken only the basic structure from the original, you cannot compare the characters of this film to those of Sholay. Almost all the characters in the new version carry different names and the plot is planted on the underworld. The name of the character I portray is Narasimha, an encounter specialist, who catches Gabbar Singh at a point in the film. I am not doing it the way Sanjeev Kumar did. I have enacted the role of Narasimha the way I can. Like the name suggests, he is a South Indian with a wife and family”.

Mohanlal also find it a god's grace to share onscreen with the legend Amitabh Bachchan. “My first shot was Amitabh Bachchan chopping my fingers off. I had to scream and I lost my voice the next day because of that. This film is more crude and violent”, remarks Lal on the new venture.

Mohanlal debuted into Hindi with Ram Gopal Varma's Company which was a hit in Bollywood. The actor's performance in the film carried rave reviews and he was acknowledged with many awards.

Now that the new film is destined to get released by the last week of August, all eyes are on to see another mesmerizing performance from the extremely talented actor.

Good time for Mohanlal

Four time National award winning actor Mohanlal lives every role he portrays. The heartthrob of Malayalam cinema has acted in Malayalam, Tamil and Hindi movies and has won various awards for his stunning performance in various movies.

He has now become the highest paid actor of Malayalam film industry after having signed the upcoming film, College Kumaran. According to reports, he is being paid a sum of Rs. 1.25 crore for the movie. The movie, slated for release on October 12, casts six female leads.

Mohanlal will also be seen in the much-awaited Hindi movie, Ram Gopal Varma Ki Aag slated for release in August.

Mohanlal as Alexander, the great

Mohanlal is wielding the character of Alexander the great in the new movie by Murali Nagavally. But don't think that Lal is on the gown of the great historic character.

Ala Vasco Da Gama, that he portrayed in Chotta Mumbai, this Alexander is also a Kerala born character, who rose to fame for his abnormal ways.

The character is scripted by P Balachandran, who has earlier written for Lal in films like Pavithram. Produced by V B K Menon in the banner of Anugraha Cine arts, the film will be festival movie shot in and around Pondicherry, Goa and Mumbai.

Alexander, the great will be one of the immediate projects of Lal which will be released in the early months of 2008.

Hello has big takers

The recent super hit of Mohanlal’s Hello which is collecting beyond expectations will be remade in Tamil and Telugu.

The Tamil and Telugu remake rights of the film was sold at a rate of sixty lakhs. The film scripted and directed by Rafi Mecartin, has already grossed three crores from its twelve day run.

The producer of the film Joy Thomas Shakthi Kulangara was more than happy as he faced a lot of adversities during the shooting of the film, ranging from the demise of Mohanlal's father, to the accidents of Salimkumar and Co and the courts cases against Jagathy Sreekumar, which all delayed the film making.

But, for now, all is well that ends well for the producer, as the film has resulted in one of the biggest hits of the year. With one of the carefully molded performances by Lal as Adv Shivaraman, the audience is crazy over the film which helps in making cash box ringing.

'In Sholay, my fingers are cut off, not hands': Mohanlal

Mohanlal was a school student when Ramesh Sippy's Sholay was released in 1975, and like most of the kids at the time, he too was fascinated by it. Little did he realise then that 32 years later, he would be a part of its remake.

In this exclusive interview, Mohanlal talks about the experience of acting in Ram Gopal Varma's version of the film called Ram Gopal Varma Ke Aag, in the role immortalised by Sanjeev Kumar.

Was there any difference in the image that you had of Sholay, the character Sanjeev Kumar portrayed, and the character you enacted in the remake?

I did not think of the original when I was acting in the film. I didn't have any plans in my mind. I don't prepare for my characters.

This is the first time you are playing a role previously portrayed by another actor.

Thirty two years is a long time. One does not remember the minute details in Sholay. Moreover, the backdrop is different. Here, the Mumbai underworld forms the background. That itself changes your costumes and the way you behave.

As this film has taken only the basic structure from the original, you cannot compare the characters of this film to those of Sholay. The name of the character I portray is Narasimha, and I am not doing it the way Sanjeev Kumar did. I have enacted the role of Narasimha the way I can. Like the name suggests, he is a South Indian with a wife and family.

What does Narasimha do in Mumbai?

He is an encounter specialist. At one point, he catches Gabbar Singh (played by Amitabh Bachchan). And unlike in Sholay, there are many reasons why Gabbar Singh is vengeful. I feel this film answers all the questions that we might have had when we saw Sholay. The loopholes in the story are plugged in this film.

Many films are remade in the world, and this is another filmmaker's attempt to remake a film that is considered as the Bible of Indian films. The main story of Sholay was the rivalry between Gabbar Singh and Thakur. Similarly, this film also essays the rivalry between Gabbar Singh and Narasimha.

Like in Sholay, did Gabbar Singh chop off your hands too?

Not hands, only fingers. You see, Narasimha is an encounter specialist and without his fingers, he is useless as he cannot fire his weapon. This film is more crude and violent. Gabbar Singh is like a psychopath here.

For an actor who uses his hands a lot while acting, how was it portraying such a character? Did you have to control yourself a lot?

Yes. I use my hands a lot while acting. I think most of us use our hands even in our conversation. But in this film, I consciously avoided using my hands. Yes, I had to control myself.

Alibhai vs Nasrani

Now, the two sought-after heroes of Malayalam film industry would fight it out with their films, Nasrani and Alibhai.

Alibhai stars Mohanlal in the lead role and is directed by Shaji Kailash and Nasrani has Mammootty in the lead role and is directed by Joshy.

Mohanlal is reported to have been paid a whopping Rs 1.25 crore to do College Kumaran, by the producers who are real estate dealers from Trichur with NRI connections. Lal ettan was earlier charging in the Rs 60 to Rs 75 Lakhs range. But for College Kumaran, he has given priority Tatkal dates.

The Pooja of the film took place in Kozhikode on Sunday, July 15, two days before the inauspicious Karkada masam starts. Vimala Raman is the heroine of the film, and the shoot will start as soon as Mohanlal completes his Ali Bhai by July 20.

Mohanlal plays a chronic bachelor and college canteen supervisor, who advices the students on everything under the sun, including matters of love! College Kumaran is slated for Ramzan release on October 12.

Hello makes cash registers ring

Indian movies with a drunkard as hero have worked well provided they also have good plots. Mohanlal as a drunkard lawyer has been liked by cine-goers and the movie Hello has shown a good initial start. The movie is sure to hit the century. The movie has opened in 56 centres with hundred percent collections.

Mohanlal's recent releases Baba Kalyani and Chota Mumbai were also well appreciated. The muhurat of his next movie College Kumaran is expected in the middle of this month. He is at present busy shooting Alibhai.

Dasan and Vijayan in cartoons

The famous characters that Mohanlal and Sreenivasan performed in Nadodikkattu and its sequels are now becoming cartoon characters.

The Adlabs Mumbai is the producing the cartoon series with this animated characters in the lead.

The post production works of this animation film will be one at Thiruvananthapuram.

Nadodikkattu and its sequences like Pattanapravesham and Akkare akkare akkare were some of the biggest hits of Mohanlal in Malayalam in the late eighties.

Top 5 movies - Indiaglitz Report

With an array of star films in the charts, the top 5 movies list offer interesting equations.

1. Hello: Director Rafi -Mecartin

Mohanlal is unstoppable with Hello which has already gained good reviews from the masses. The film with plenty of slapstick comedies and terrifying performance from Lal will be a sure winner. The film has already grossed around 2 crores from its nine days run.

2. Mission 90 Days: Director - Major Ravi

This real story behind the investigation saga of N S G commandos to trace out Shivarasan opened well this week with 100 percent collections. The film with its technical brilliancy and of course, Mammootty is destined to get a decent opening but how long the collections survive is a matter to look into.

3. Arabikkatha: Director - Lal Jose

The film by Lal Jose is increasingly becoming popular day after day. The film which opened with 60 percent collections has now picked up to eighty percent and will surely break even as per the industry reports. The songs are already on the top of the charts and the good mouth publicity is an added advantage for the film.

4. July 4: Director - Joshy

Even after a big hit like Vinodhayathra, Dileep was not able to keep the momentum going in July 4. The film is a watchable stuff with good songs, but is not doing business as expected.

5. Shivaji: Director - Shankar

The biggest movie of our times is collecting at 60 percent in cities, but the rage it created in the opening weeks have died out. The film has already made collections of more than 8 crores from the state itself, in an around a month.

Mohanlal connects with audience again in 'Hello'

Cast: Mohanlal, Parvathy Melton, Jagathy Sreekumar and Siddique;Director: Rafi-Mecartin; Producer: Joy Thomas Sakthikulangara; Music: Alex Paul

For the first time in their career, superstar Mohanlal and director duo Rafi-Mecartin come together in "Hello", a laugh riot crafted for the actor and his fans. The film satisfies the directors' fan club as well.

The story yields a string of a-gag-a-minute situations, fully and unapologetically exploiting Mohanlal's flair for comedy. The storyline may otherwise be wafer thin, but the viewer is not given an opportunity to think about it till the end.

It is all about lawyer Sivaraman (Mohanlal), an alcoholic, who leaves his practice and hits the bottle after his family disapproves of his love.

Action begins when he receives an anonymous call on his cell phone from a damsel in distress who has been abducted by goons. He rescues the woman and learns that she is from a wealthy North Indian joint family and someone from that family wants to kill her for the property.

The plot thickens, with suspected villains chasing the woman and the ensuing confusion, tension and action. Follow the twists and turns, which lead to the grand finale.

It is a typical Rafi-Mecartin plot - racing away in the first half and proceeding at a snail's pace in the second.

Mohanlal is the soul of the film and carries it on his shoulders. However, Jagathy Sreekumar shares some of his burden.

Parvathy Melton, the leading lady is just a pretty face in her debut film. Maybe we can expect more from her in future.

Alex Paul's music is apt for such a film. He has churned out a mixture of foot-tapping numbers and melodious songs.

Right from their first film itself, director duo Rafi and Mecartin have been churning out colourful entertainers for all sections of viewers. And their latest offering Hallo too conforms to this pattern.

Hallo tells the story of an advocate named Sivaraman who is addicted to boozing and is seldom seen in a sober condition. He is mostly found in bars and toddy shops and seldom goes to the court. His constant companion in such outings is Chandy Kunju, his close friend. It is always Chandy's job to bring the drunken Sivaraman back home in a bike, which is fitted with a side-car for this purpose.

Sivaraman has a reason for hitting the bottle so hard and that has to do with his family, which consists of his parents and his younger brother, who is a Police Officer. He is taking revenge on his family for having been indirectly responsible for the death of a girl whom he loved. Boozing helps him forget his sorrows.

Things take a change when Parvathy, a young girl who hails from a very rich and influential family makes an entry into Sivaraman's life. Parvathy is forced to flee from home following certain hints that there is a possibility of her being murdered by her own uncles. But while on the run, she falls into the hands of the goons sent by her enemies and she is locked up in a room. While she tries to make a call, the goons smash the telephone. But Parvathy manages to join wires and the person she gets on line is Sivaraman, who is a total stranger to her.

Sivaraman rescues her and takes it upon himself to save her. From here Sivaraman's life takes a twist. Other characters now appear like Parvathy's father Bada Saab, her uncles Mahesh Bhai and Dinu, and her relative Susheel Bhai, all of whom manage a finance company named Dalal and Dalal Co. The Company's legal adviser Thomas Jacob and Praveen and Chidambaram who work in the company, too have decisive roles to play in the subsequent happenings. And thus develops the plot of Hallo.

The main highlight or attraction of Hallo is not the story itself, but the way the story is presented, plus of course the presence and performance of Mohanlal in the lead role. The story, which is one of intrigue and suspense in the latter half, is treated rather colourfully, with the correct blending of comedy, songs et al in true Rafi-Mecartin style.

Mohanlal gives a thoroughly enjoyable performance as Sivaraman. It is no less than a treat to watch him portray the always-inebriated lawyer with lan. Jagathy Sreekumar gives good support as Chandy Kunju, who has a limp on one of his feet, but always outruns people who chase him. Parvathy Melton as Parvathy is good. Madhu as Bada Saab, Siddique as Mahesh Bhai, Ganesh as Sivaraman's brother Sudheesh, Jagadeesh as Thomas Jacob, Salim Kumar as Chidambaram, Saiju Kurup as Praveen, Janardhanan as Sivaraman's father, Madhu Warrier as Susheel Bhai etc do justice to their respective roles. Sphadikom George, Bheeman Reghu and Mohanraj (Keerikaadan Jose) as the three funny goons who stand by Sivaraman, add colour to the whole show.

As for the technical aspects, Sanjeev Shankar's camera work, Boban's sets and Don Max's cuts are perfectly in tune with the mood of the film and are no doubt among the highlights of the film. Of the songs, "Chella thaamare..." has come out quite well. In all, Hallo is a Mohanlal-starrer that you would just like to go out and enjoy, setting aside all your worries and preconceptions. A perfect entertainer!

Hello - Mohanlal excels in Hello

Who can handle the role of a comic drunken lawyer better than Mohanlal. If you research through all the Indian filmi history, you may not get even any another competant from the south. And if you have any doubt on this, Hello is a film for you. The actor with his ease and timing simply rocks playing Adv. Sivaraman in the film. Rafi & Mecartin, the duo who has translated comedy trends with their films, has given a clean family entertainer, with a near to perfect combination with the master actor who has once again displayed his carefree style with elegance. This light hearted movie will make you laugh all through out and will sent you home with chuckles.

The directors with the title Hello have made a laugh riot from the opening scene itself with variable ring tones assigned in the hand phones of various characters that instantly give the nature of the characters. Moreover they get very much with the comic capabilities of Lal , creating spaces in every sequences to display his strengths, and he very well translates even a minute gestures to bring in bigger laughs among viewers.

In the film Mohanlal is Sivaraman, a lazy criminal lawyer whose main weakness, is for the bottle. He likes to spend more time on bars and wouldn’t even bother to appear in court. He does not have much to look forward to in life and travels in the side car attached to a bike of Chandy who is his constant companion in his drinking bouts. Handy (Jagathy) brings Sivaraman home on most days, bailing him out of difficult situations. The presentation of Siva Raman in the film is on a day when he has a drunken fight with three rowdies in the police list- Vadakancherry Vakkan (Spadikam George), Pattambi Ravi (Kireekadan Jose), and Batherry Bapu (Bheeman Reghu). And what finally happens is that they become his bodyguards, who are ready to do anything for him.

Siva Raman also has a long flashback which changed him to an alcoholic. In his early days he loved a girl named Priya (Samvrutha). But his parents were not prepared to not let him marry the girl of his choice and she was brutally murdered on the day they planned for elopment. And now Siva Raman is on his revenge against his family, by die drinking, thus giving pain to his parents!

And for that he still lives with his family, who are now regretting about the incident.

And in the life of Shiva Raman comes a twist in the form of a phone from Parvathy, a girl in distress, who pleads with him to save her life as she was kidnapped by goons who will kill her unless she provides the password of her bank account. This call alters Siva Raman's life, as he is forced to do much to save Parvathy, who herself is a rich Marwadi heiress. As his father Bada Bhai (Madhu) who runs a network of banks along with his brothers and other relatives is presently in London to do kidney transplantation, some one in the joint family is trying to clear off her by that time to squabble for wealth.

Siva Raman take Parvathy to his home pretending that she is his wife, as he tries to save her from her greedy relatives like Mahesh Bhai (Siddique), Dinu Bhai (Riza Bava), family lawyer Thomaskutty (Jagadheesh) and others. But Shiva Raman doesn't know that he is being trapped by the anonymous baddies who also kills two in the process. What is left for Shiva Raman is to use his advocating skills and brains, with muscle powers of his friends to unravel the mystery behind the murders, and kidnapping.

The film which flows into two and a half hours belongs to Mohanlal, the one man entertainment troupe, who shoulders the weight of the heavy twists in the plots, all by himself. He is thoroughly adorable and endlessly endears himself with his sensitivity and comic timing and easy-going camaraderie with Jagathy Sree Kumar his friend with a limp in one leg.

Adds color and vitality to the film, the performances from the entire cast is commendable. Debutante Parvathy Milton has proven that she is not just a pretty face and impress particularly with her dancing skills. Siddhique with his more than menacing looks and Suraj as an S I do their roles effectively while Risa Bawa, Shaiju Kurup, Madhu Warrier, Janardhanan and Ganeshkumar are in their usual self.

The second half is a bit of a letdown and drags in and around stock characters -- The film often defies logic in their story lines, but who cares for logic in such a racy comedy. The murder mystery is solved by the hero in a long drawn out dialogue drama in the end reminding you of a similar longer sequence line.

Truth If it was presented in a more appealing and logical way of investigation, the film could have made an even more impact among the audience, but it is not a worry as Rafi-Mecartin brand of filmmaking, Once again successes to deliver a sure hit.

The film is also technically savvy with good camera by Sanjeev Shankar, setdesigns by Bobban, Don Max's editing all which enriches the entertainer. Songs by Alex Paul are average.

All in all, the film is a light-hearted and entertaining vehicle that can be enjoyed by people of all ages.
