Top 5 movies of the week - Hello still keeps No:1 Position

With the effects of another disastrous Onam dying out, most of the films released for Onam have virtually burnt out leaving the ones that were released earlier, into surprising hits.

The top 5 movies of the week are certainly surprising, if you have not watched this column for the last few weeks.

1. Hello - Mohanlal's biggest hit of the year continues to be the number one of the charts even after eleven weeks of release. The film continues in 13 centers across the state.

2. Arabikatha - In a surprise rebound, Arabikatha which was released on July 4 still attracts masses than the Onam releases. In many centres the film replaced many Onam releases after a gap of three weeks.

3. Alibhai - The film manages forty percent in major centres, even though half of the release centres have shifted it. Chances for becoming a break even are there, if it survives another three weeks in major centres.

4. Ore Kadal - Director Shyamaprasad's film about an affair between a megalomaniac social scientist and a simple housewife, have daring performances, but the film is mostly seen as high class entertainer. The movie manages to keep its momentum in very few city centres, but with increasing mouth publicity, the film maybe in theatres for another couple of weeks

5. Nivedhyam -This film by Lohithadas has successfully launched it major stars and they got many openings in newer films, but film is struggling to find audience. All chances are that this will become a losing proportion for Lal release.

With Ramzan month going on, no movies are expected to make any surprise collections for a couple of weeks. Rather there are more chances of them to leave the theaters for new Tamil and Hindi releases.

Ramzan releases

As the Muslim holy month of Ramzan starts today in Kerala, the filmi season that followed the big festival of Onam is taking a break for a month. The period of Ramzan with fasting and ifthars is normally looked upon as one of least collections. Not many producers will attempt to make releases during this month in Kerala. In Malabar area of the state, most of the theatres will either shut down during the day time or will go for their annual maintenance. The films that are on theatres will face a collection drop of at least a forty percent. And for this year, the major releases will happen only in the last week of Ramzan. Most films are now slated for a release on the 12th and 13th of October. This year Ramzan may prove to be a much better one than Onam as films gearing up for releases are more promising and colorful than the Onam ones.- Mammootty' will have his Nasrani which was earlier planned for this Onam.Dileep will be happy to find his long pending Calcutta News to theatres while Pyramid Syamira will make their first release in Malayalam with Mohanlal’s Pardesi. The other films that may steal the season's show will be Suresh Gopi's Black Cat and Pritviraj's Chocolate, which was also planned as Onam releases.

All these films will get a month’s time to prepare best for the box office fight, as all of them have completed their shooting.

"Flash" to start by Sep 25

Flash, which marks the reunion of Mohanlal with Sibi Malayil after long years, will start its shooting by the 25th of this month. The film which is planned in locations like Kanjangad and Kozhikode will be the film which Lal will be doing immediately after he comes back from the U S tour. The flick is confirmed as the Christmas release of Mohanlal. Scripted by S Bhasurachandran, the film will have Parvathy (Notebook fame) in the female lead.Produced by an NRI Tommichan Mulakupadam, the film will be a psycho thriller which also deals with suspense, and investigation. The movie will also have Murali, Jagathy, Jagadish, Sai Kumar, Siddique, Inderjit and Salim Kumar in the cast.As every eye in the business are on the comeback of the duo together, the least the filmgoer will expect is in the likes of their earlier classics like His Highness Abdullah, Bharatham, Kireedam, Kamaladalam, Dasaratham.

Top 5 movies

This years Onam was the most undelightful festival that the filmi business witnessed in recent times. Four films were released for the festival but surprisingly not any one from them climbed the top of the box office list. The top five Malayalam films are:

1. Hello - As expected after the preview reports of Onam films, Mohanlal's Hello still manages to grab in eighty percent audiences in major cities. The film which continues in more than thirty centres even after 65 days is the number one film, even in its tenth week

2 Alibhai - Mohanlal's much-hyped Onam film, directed by his favorite Shaji Kailas, did disappoint his fans But the nonsense repeat drama still makes it up to the second position. The film will find it hard to retain the position as many centres are planning to shift the film by this weekend.

3. Ore Kadal - After a very week start, Ore Kadal has gradually started inviting audiences. A film which still holds below 50 percent audiences tells the story of an affair between a megalomaniac social scientist and a housewife. With bigger stars like Mammootty, Meera Jasmine, Narein and its daring non traditionalist theme, the film was expected to make it through even after a faulty start. The growing mouth publicity about the performances and the charm of the flick seems in the positive side of the film’s trade.

4. Naivedyam - Veteran director Lohithadas with a tried and tested formula love story with newcomers didn’t get any big start. But the film continues in theatres due to the good marketing capabilities of the distributors. The feel fresh faces of the cast and the songs are the high points of the film.

5. Kichamani MBA - The film will definitely become a loser, but survived weeks due to the festival crowd pull.

The other films in theatres like Arabikkatha and Nadhiya Kollapetta Rathri has emerged as good hits with the Onam pull. With films like Indrajith and Hero poised to be in theatres this week, the story next week will be a bit different.

Thakur Vs Inspector Narasimha

Thakur (Sanjeev Kumar - Sholay):

Sanjeev Kumar wonderfully portrayed the role of Thakur. Forming the crux of the story, Thakur is the mainstay of the film. His character’s plot for revenge is what the whole film revolves around. Without Thakur, there is no Sholay. More importantly, without Sanjeev Kumar, there is no Thakur. He lifted the character to great heights and because of him; Thakur has reached a great status today, just like Gabbar.

Inspector Narasimha (Mohanlal - RGV Ki Aag):

Present day, we will be seeing Mohanlal enacting the role of Thakur, which is now being named Inspector Narasimha. It will indeed be a tough task for him to live up to someone of Sanjeev Kumar’s caliber. But Mohanlal was born to play this role. As a matter of fact, I believe out of the entire casting, his is the most suiting. Even before the film, you just know Mohanlal is going to deliver. There are barely any qualms from anyone about him playing this role because pretty much everyone knows he can carry it. Mohanlal is a gifted actor, and we expect him to prove it yet again with his portrayal of Inspector Narasimha.

Report from Bollyspice

Sibi Malayil Back with Two Mohanlal Films

Sibi on his comeback has turned more vigorous and energetic than ever. He has announced two films back to back with Mohanlal. One of the films titled ‘Flash’ will commence shooting from first week of October and will be the Christmas release of the star. S Bhasurachandran, a well-known journalist has done the script of the film. This suspense thriller will have ‘Note Book’ fame Parvathy in the lead. The film is produced by Tomichan under the banner of Mulakupadam films.Sibi Malayil’s second film will reunite Lohitha Das with him. The film has been titled ‘Bheeshmar’ and works on it will begin on March 2008.

AAG - Mohanlal Done Excellent Job

The film AAg is getting a bad responds from audience.Even it is a Big hit remake Ramu did not try his level best to make the film better than Sholay, he even tried to make AAG to reach atleast near to Sholay. The only positive thing in the film is Mohanlal. He acted brilliantly in this film.Even Amithab Bachan also acted good but everybody will notice Lal's performance and will remember his performance only. Mohanlal's dialogue presentations are good in this AAG he made better than the film Company.
While u watch the film definitely you will give applause to Mohanlal in the scene where Big B cuts his fingers, the scene is very nice,Mohanlal's expression is perfect,he acted brilliantly in this film.Any how the film is not good as Sholay everybody who have seen the film AAG will remember Mohanlal and Big B's performance.

Onam Without Malayalam Film

Poor marketing and planning once again led to another dismal festival season this year.As the four films that were released for this Onam failed to draw audiences due to their weak entertaining proportions, the large group of the audience remained stuck to their TV Sets.Even in major cities more than four Tamil films were enjoying packed houses in the theatres.

Films like Thottal Poo Malarum, Munna, Sivaji, Thee Nagar and Love in London were those that were in city theatres. While in less known towns and B centres, the theatres owners very well found that it will be youths rather than families who are going to fill their centres and for them they also played mainstream masala filled Tamil films that just passed out from the A centres.

Hindi films like Hey Baby and Chak De India were also the favorites this season. Adding to the Mollywood's woes Mohanlal's Hindi film RGV Ki Aag also opened in full houses.

AAG - NDTV Movies Report

After months of hype, controversy and court cases, RGV Ki Aag finally arrived in theaters this week. Ramu has never been short on guts. He has played by his own rules and created space for his brand of distinctive cinema. In Sarkar he took on the classic The Godfather. And now he reinvents the other cinematic holy cow: Sholay. The difference is that in Sarkar, the spirit of The Godfather hovered in the background. Sarkar was a fully realized film that stood on its own.In Aag, the spirit of Sholay has consumed the film and turned it into half-baked mess much like Linda Blair in The Exorcist.Characters, scenes, dialogue and even the background music echo the original. Only the names have changed because of legal complications. So anyone who has seen the original - and that's everyone over twenty-five-can't help but compare the two and I'm afraid there is no comparison.

Ramesh Sippy's Sholay is a classic because every element in it worked to perfection. The ingredients of popular Hindi film-action, romance, emotion, comedy-were blended perfectly to create the premium masala mix. Each character was finely-etched, every dialogue memorable. In Aag, only the drama of Narsimha versus Babban comes alive. Everything else, especially the romance and comedy, is absolutely limp. The milieu isn't the Bombay underworld that Ramu specializes in but a strange, half-urban-half-rural space called Kaliganj where Babban stomps around in giant boots. The stand-out performances here are Monhanlal as the upright cop and Amitabh Bachchan as the heinous criminal. Mr. B chews up the scenery with his psychotic bad behavior. There's a spectacularly funny moment when he looks at Nisha Kothari and declares: Toh yeh hai Miss Kaliganj. But beyond a point all the guns, gore, snarling and ugly men shot at impossible angles becomes totally exhausting.Thirty-two years after the original, the only improvement Ramu has managed is that he's fleshed out the character of Sambha, here called Thambe and performed superbly by Sushant Singh.Aag might work for teenagers who haven't seen Sholay but for those of us who've savored the original film not once but ten, twenty, thirty times, RGV Ki Aag is an exercise in futility.

Sibi Malayil - Mohanlal team with Flash

Sibi Malayil has kept away from Malayalam film industry due to some petty issues with the producers association, following a petition from the producer of his last film Amrutham about the bad audio track, the film carried. But now the associations have cleared off the allegations made against the talented director and have lifted the ban enforced on him. In his comeback Sibi is more energetic than ever announcing his two films with Mohanlal, back to back.

The first film titled Flash will start by the first week of October. The film scripted by S Bhasurachandran, an eminent journalist is a suspenseful film which has Note Book fame Parvathy in the lead. Produced by Tomichan in the banner of Mulakupadam films, will be the Christmas release of the star.

The second film of Sibi Malayil will witness the reunion of Lohitha Das with the master director. The film titled as Bheeshmar will start by March of 2008

RGV Ki Aag

As the Onam films failed to create any impulse in the box office, now all the eyes are on to Ram Gopal Varma Ki Aag to create any kind of waves in the Malayalam box office. The film which has Malayalam Superstar Mohanlal as the protagonist opened in a number of theatres all along the state.

The film which is inspired from Sholay has an ensemble cast including Amitabh Bachchan, Ajay Devgan, Mohanlal,Rajpal Yadav, Nisha Kothari, Susmita Sen, Prashant Raj and Urmila Matonkar. Mohanlal plays Inspector Narasimha, an encounter specialist with a justifiable vendetta against Babban, a psychopath killer played by Amitabh Bachchan. The biggest problem that the film face will definitely the comparison's with the original hit which even now continues to be the best in a million hearts.
